My German programmer friends all rave about Total Commander for Windows which was built to take the place of Norton Commander for the power user. Always been meaning to try it.

Total Commander being that good, an open-source version of it was commissioned - Double Commander: http://doublecmd.sourceforge.net

It supports Total Commander's large pool of plug-ins, and is multi-platform.
